High School Senior

5 Tips for your High School Senior Year

Senior year is no joke. It's a lot of pressure culminating in a year where you feel like the rest of your life's success depends on what happens this year.  I'm not expert, but here are some things I've learned from being the mother of a senior this year, and from being a senior myself (I know it was a long time ago, but I still remember it).

1. The most important thing I can tell you is to ENJOY yourself! Don't take it all so seriously. Yes, important decisions are being made, and yes, they will determine the course of your life, but there is no rule that says you need to worry about it all day every day. Spend time with your friends. Go to the football games, homecoming dance, rallies, parties, and everything else you love to do. Explore your home town, and enjoy it all. Don't neglect your school work, but don't spend every minute studying and worrying. Try to achieve that nice balance.

2. PLAN AHEAD - Don't wait until the last minute to get your applications and scholarship submissions in. At the beginning of the year choose where you want to apply, and do a little research to find out when the deadlines are. Start early and get a little bit done at a time. Then you won't be up all night the day before the deadline. One huge mistake we made was not getting one of the applications in before the priority deadline. My daughter missed out on a full ride scholarship because of it. That was an expensive lesson to learn.

There are people who you can pay to help you through this process. This might be a great option for you. HERE is an article about college consultants.

Check around to see if there is a local ALUMNI REPRESENTATIVE from the university you are applying to. We were able to get lots of great information about one of the universities my daughter was applying to from the alumni representative for this area. She even had a code waving the application fee. You can find these representatives at college fairs or online.

3. TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES - I don't think teenagers have a hard time doing this, but there are some things you might forget. Take pictures of you and your friends on a regular day at school. Document your favorite lunch spot, your parking space, you with your favorite teacher, your locker, or hanging out in the library. Don't forget pictures at sporting events - maybe even with the school mascot. I promise these images will become priceless to you.

4. EVERYTHING WILL BE OK - All these years you've been told if you don't do well in school you won't get into college, and then you won't be successful in life. Yes, it's true that doing well in high school makes it so much easier to get into a great college, which sets you up for a great education. It's also true that some of you might not get into your dream school despite your hard work. It's incredibly disappointing, and frankly it hurts. Please believe me when I tell you it's not the end of the world. There are countless paths to success. Yours might not be what you always envisioned, but you can get there.

Some of you might get to school and find out you hate it. It's not the end of the world. You have so many options. You can transfer somewhere else, or change your major, or do something completely different. It doesn't mean you've failed. It just means you've ruled out that path in your life. Isn't it so amazing that we have so many opportunities to do what we want? Follow your passions. Do what you love. Don't settle for something that is just OK. You have a long life ahead of you, and you will be so much happier if you can do what you love.

5. DON'T FORGET ABOUT YOUR PARENTS - OK, so this is a shameless plug for moms. It's really hard to see your child grow up and get ready to move away. It's scary, and they worry - A LOT. Be patient with your parents. This is life changing for them, and for you. It's a scary thing to have your child move away.  Go easy on your parents. Next year you'll be missing them.

5 Things to Think About When Planning your Senior Portrait Session

Are you graduating soon? Have you been thinking of doing senior portraits, but you're not sure if it's worth it? Are you worried they will look like everyone else's and be boring? Here are my tips for having a successful senior portrait experience.

1. Think about what you want to do with the images.

Are these for a photo album, to hang on the wall forever in your parent's house, or to display on a shelf or desk? Having a plan for what to do with your images before your session sets you up for success.

If you want to display them in your home think about the colors of the location and your clothing. Will they match the colors of your home? Do you have a particular wall in mind? Will you need a vertical or horizontal image to fill the space?

2. Make your senior portraits all about what excites you.

What makes you unique? What do you love to do? What has made high school special for you? Thinking about your talents and interests, and incorporating them into your session will make the images so personal and meaningful to you. You'll look back and remember all the memories of this time in your life. The senior displayed here is a super star soccer player. She didn't want her whole session to be about soccer, but we did include some of her in her uniform.

Maybe you can't think of anything that makes you unique. I think you're wrong. It can be anything. Do you love to garden, bake, read, hike, row, play the piano, or even sunbathe at the beach? There are fun and creative ways to include those things into your session.

3. Ask your photographer for help.

I hope you hire me, but if you don't, which will make me very sad, ask your photographer for guidance. It's our job to make you look good. Any good photographer should have suggestions for locations, the time of day to schedule your session for the best lighting, what to wear, and any other question you might have. I love it when clients bring a few change of clothes. You might consider wearing a casual outfit that defines you in high school, and then a dressier outfit that you love.

4. Bring a Friend

Let's be honest, it's a little scary to show up at a location with a photographer you don't know at all or only know in passing and have them point a camera at your face for an hour. I always suggest that my clients bring a friend. Bring your parents of course, but maybe you want to bring a friend or two as well. Having a familiar face there who knows exactly how to make you laugh, and make you feel comfortable makes the experience fun. I am more than happy to even take a few shots of the friends all together.

5. Make a Night of It

You will probably spend a lot of time getting all dressed up for your senior portraits. Think about getting your hair and make up done by a professional. I know that I feel amazing after I've been to the salon. It will add a level of confidence you might be craving.

After your session plan something fun to do. Go out and enjoy how amazing you look. I promise you won't regret it.

Family Forever

When I was in 7th Grade I moved here. I am not a person who does well with change. I was quickly enrolled in school, and we started to go to our local church. Christina was there. She was so tall and beautiful. She was also warm and friendly, and I liked her immediately. She is now married, and the mother of these two boys who keep her busy. The oldest one is graduating, and life seems to be going too fast. They make a beautiful family, and I am so honored they drove 600 miles to be here for this session.

Senior Year

Senior year of high school is a time unlike any other. Everything is ending and beginning at the same time. There is so much pressure to make the right decisions because your whole life depends on it. Nobody tells you it's OK if things don't turn out just how you planned. Sometimes the best things in life are the ones that happen beyond our control.

These two didn't have to worry about not getting into the university of their choice. They are now at Stanford and Emory, hopefully having the time of their life. They worked hard and deserve everything they earned. This session was just a bit of fun. I hope these images bring back fantastic memories for them whenever they look back on their senior year.
