The day before his bar mitzvah the family gathered to take the photos. It was such a joyful gathering of this boy’s family from near and far to celebrate him. It was important to the mom that we had posed as well as candid photos of the family being together.

Five Tips for a Successful Family Photo Session
Beachtastic
These are some of my favorite families. Some of them are sending kids off on missions and college, and some are celebrating their child’s very first birthday. All of them are happy and wonderful, and they chose the beach as the location for their session so I could visit my favorite place to hang out. I love families.

The day was incredibly windy and cold. It was only September, but for some reason there was a chill in the air, and the wind made it harder to bear. I knew the mom was feeling stress as she got all of her kids ready after school to make it in time for sunset at the beach. Pictures are very important to her, and she wanted the most beautiful pictures of her family as possible.
I left the beach thinking the session was a huge success. Yes it was windy, and yes it was chilly, but the kids were happy, and the parents played and showed their joy for their family just like I like it. At 3:00 in the morning I received an email from the mom saying how nervous she was about her hair being blown crazy by the wind in all of the pictures. She was sure none of them would be good. I could tell she was up late in the night riddled with those anxious, nervous feelings moms get. Don’t they seem to be so much worse in the middle of the night when everyone is sleeping, and it’s dark and quiet?
The next day I reassured her that the session was a success, and that I was confident she would love the images. When she came in for her ordering session and saw her family she was teary eyed. She couldn’t believe how much she loved seeing her family together, and their wind blown hair didn’t even matter.
The images with the mom in them are my favorite from this session. I can feel the love she has for her family just by seeing the joy on her face. It makes me wish that I could show every mom out there how important, needed, loved, and BEAUTIFUL they are. Perfection isn’t real. No family is perfect, and the imperfect parts are what make us interesting. Real life is so much more beautiful.
