When I started my business my goal was go photograph families in a fun and modern way. While studio portraits are beautiful and so nice to capture families together, I hate how stiff they are. They are lacking in personality and joy. I can’t stand fake smiles. I can spot them a mile away. I hope I can make you feel comfortable enough in front of the camera that your smiles are genuine and real. If you can have fun at your photo shoot that’s even better. Here are some tips to make your family photo session a huge success.
Leave plenty of time in your day to get ready so you’re not running late. Nobody is happy and cheerful while they are rushing around. Plan your outfits, accessories, shoes, and hair styles well in advance so there are no surprises.
Tell lots of jokes, sing your toddlers favorite songs, or anything else that will bring happiness to your children. They will feel the lighthearted mood, and look so much happier in the photos.
Don’t threaten your kids and spouse with punishment if they don’t smile. That’s a recipe for disaster, and scared smiles.
Let me worry about how you look. It’s my job to make you look good in the photos. It’s up to me to tell you how to stand, sit, and what to do with your hands. During your session I’ll be paying attention to the background, lighting, posing, facial expressions, hair, and as many details as possible. Trust me to direct you and the kids in what looks best. Of course I’m open to your ideas, but don’t feel like you have to run the show. Just try to relax and enjoy being with your family.
Plan a special place to go after your photo session. It can be going out to dinner, your favorite park, or even getting ice cream. It’s nice to go out when you’re all dressed up, and it’s fun to have something to look forward to.
