For the Troops

Paula Cornell was with her husband one night in 2005 when he realized he didn’t have a toothbrush. He said it was no big deal, especially after going a whole year without one when he was serving in the military in Vietnam. Paula was shocked to learn that they went without basic comforts including toilet paper. She did not want our troops to have to go without. She began creating care packages for service men and women deployed in foreign countries. What started out as one woman’s act of compassion is now a huge non-profit, all volunteer organization called For The Troops that has sent out over 200,000 care packages. They even have their own storefront in Simi Valley where volunteers come in to create these care packages year round.

Through their website anyone can request a care package for someone they know. It is clearly a labor of love, and I was blown away to visit their location and photograph them for the Valley Vista Neighbors Magazine. Paula and her fellow volunteers make me feel lazy. They bring so much joy to so many people with their hard work. If you look at their website you can read the response from the recipients of the care packages. They bring tears to my eyes. It is proof that one small act can change lives.

They can always use more help. Click here to see how you can help For The Troops.
