Homecoming

Oh how I love going to a military homecoming. There’s almost no other occasion that is so joyous. This family I photographed was a dream. The little girl could not have been sweeter. Just look at her smile!!! Her little baby brother had not ever been held by his dad. This was their first time seeing each other, and I was so so so honored to photograph it.

I hope you enjoy scrolling down to see the pure joy on this family’s faces as they see each other for the first time after a long time being separated. I’m so glad I could be there to witness it in person. Be sure to view the slideshow to see it all.

Welcome Home

If you’ve never been to a military homecoming you are missing out. It’s an event of immeasurable joy. Along with the biggest smiles you’ve ever seen you’ll also see tears and lots and lots of hugging. This adorable family asked me to photograph their reunion with their husband and father. It was such an honor.

For the Troops

Paula Cornell was with her husband one night in 2005 when he realized he didn’t have a toothbrush. He said it was no big deal, especially after going a whole year without one when he was serving in the military in Vietnam. Paula was shocked to learn that they went without basic comforts including toilet paper. She did not want our troops to have to go without. She began creating care packages for service men and women deployed in foreign countries. What started out as one woman’s act of compassion is now a huge non-profit, all volunteer organization called For The Troops that has sent out over 200,000 care packages. They even have their own storefront in Simi Valley where volunteers come in to create these care packages year round.

Through their website anyone can request a care package for someone they know. It is clearly a labor of love, and I was blown away to visit their location and photograph them for the Valley Vista Neighbors Magazine. Paula and her fellow volunteers make me feel lazy. They bring so much joy to so many people with their hard work. If you look at their website you can read the response from the recipients of the care packages. They bring tears to my eyes. It is proof that one small act can change lives.

They can always use more help. Click here to see how you can help For The Troops.

Welcome Home

There are very few things in life happier than a military homecoming. I'm always honored when I'm asked to photograph one. This one was no exception. These families said goodbye to their loved ones last November. Their arrival kept getting postponed, but finally it was time for them to come home this last Tuesday. What a joyful moment it was to see them finally arrive and all of the family members make a run for it, even in heals and beautiful dresses.

The slideshow shows the whole story. It made me tear up, and I had been looking at these images for hours. There's just no way to fake the raw emotion their reunion. Thank you Grace for asking me to photograph your special moment.
